What is New CLAIT and why should I study for it?

New CLAIT is the replacement for the ever-popular Computer Literacy And Information Technology and is a very well-known qualification which is regarded highly amongst employers. There are more than 2,000,000 holders of the old CLAIT certificate worldwide, making it one of the most widely-recognised IT qualifications available.

At Central Manchester CLC, New CLAIT is suited for both absolute beginners and for those with some basic computer knowledge, because of the way it is taught. The interviewing tutor will be able to tell you more about this when you come for your initial interview for a course.

Courses in New CLAIT are delivered in a format known as resource based learning, which gives students total flexibility over how they study.

How long does the course last?

New CLAIT is estimated to last for around 60 hours: in other words, if you study for the fixed 90 minutes per week, 40 weeks. However, you can attend the Centre for more than 90 minutes per week, making use of our Open Learning sessions, or study at home using the materials we provide for you.

What does the New CLAIT course involve?

Unlike the 'old' CLAIT course, which required three modules for a pass certificate, the New CLAIT course covers five modules of work.

The first module, Using a Computer, introduces students to the fundamentals of starting up a computer, creating a file, printing it, and shutting down the computer afterwards. This is a compulsory module and all students must attempt and pass it before progressing.

Following this first module are four optional modules, and at present, students may choose from any of the following:

  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Graphs and Charts
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Presentation Graphics

Additional modules will be introduced over time.

How are the modules marked?

Each student’s assessment is marked by the class tutor. The examining body lays down strict guidelines over what is and is not acceptable in a student’s work. If a student completes an assessment task and are deemed to have passed that assessment task they can move on to the next module.

Each module has only a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ outcome -- there are no grades or other classifications such as ‘merit’ and ‘distinction’. This is also true of the New CLAIT certificate itself.

You should be aware that all marking is subject to scrutiny by a second marker, who is nominated by the examining board and is not connected in any way to the Centre. This means that results are provisional until confirmed by the external examiner.

What happens if I fail a module?

If you don't pass a module on your first attempt, there is no need to worry. The tutor will offer you feedback on where your first attempt failed, and then you will be allowed a second attempt.

Unlike the 'old' CLAIT course, this second assignment will not be the same paper as the first -- naturally, the skills being tested will be identical, but the subject matter will be different.

What happens after I have passed the New CLAIT course?

New CLAIT can stand alone as a valuable qualification in itself, or it can be used as a foundation to study CLAIT Plus. It is also valid as evidence of skills and knowledge for NVQ units.

Most people who complete the New CLAIT course will enroll for the next level, CLAIT Plus. Here at the City Learning Centre, you can join this course year round -- there is no need to wait until September.

How do I enroll for the New CLAIT course?

The New CLAIT course costs:

  • £45 for those in full time work (more than 30 hours per week)
  • £20 for those in part time work (16 to 29 hours per week)
  • £4 for the unwaged, or those who work less than 16 hours per week.

It is free of charge for students aged 16 to 18. Please note that the automatic fee exemption for employees of Manchester City Council is no longer available.
